We watched twenty points along the corridor on every satellite pass, comparing each one against its own past behaviour. The reach containing this shoal was flagged from our first observation, and stayed flagged.

Each point is scored against its own past behaviour, not against a fixed number borrowed from elsewhere. A score only counts once it holds across consecutive passes.

Interpreting the scores

Phalta and Falta Bar are two adjacent points on the same reach, a short distance apart.

The surface signal peaking in mid-May and settling — weeks before the depth loss was formally written down. The signal precedes the paperwork, which is the whole point.

What satellites can cost effectively do that vessels can't

Satellite observation is a proxy for change at the water surface. What it can do, and what a survey vessel cannot, is watch every point continuously, in any weather, for months at a time — so the survey goes where it is needed.
